Chile's Codelco suspends production at El Teniente due to heavy rains
SANTIAGO, April 16 (Reuters) - World No.1 copper producer Codelco said late on Saturday that heavy rains have forced the Chilean state-owned miner to suspend production at its century-old underground El Teniente mine, likely leading to the loss of 5,000 tonnes of copper.
Codelco suspended production activities at El Teniente's mine and plant after some 180 millimeters (7 inches) of rain fell over the past 48 hours, prompting landslides and waterways to breach their banks and damaging transportation infrastructure for personnel and minerals.
