PARIS May 12 (Reuters) - French oil major Total denied it had signed an offshore exploration deal with Cuba during President Francois Hollande's visit as previously reported by Cuban television.

"Total categorically denies it has signed an offshore exploration agreement with Cuba," a spokesman told Reuters on Tuesday. Total has no existing Cuban exploration activities.

Cuban state-run television had reported the exploration agreement earlier without giving further details.

A source with knowledge of the matter said the French oil company's marketing and services branch - which handles oil products distribution such as lubricants and jet fuel - had signed an extension to an existing letter of intent. (Reporting by Michel Rose; Editing by Andrew Callus)
