New Caledonia local govt allows conditional restart of Vale nickel mine

SYDNEY, June 2 (Reuters) - A New Caledonia local government said on Monday it has allowed the restart of Brazil-based Vale’s nickel mine operations under several conditions.

Production at the $6 billion Goro site was halted more than three weeks ago following an acid spill into a local river, sparking violent protests.

The Southern Province of the French-administered Pacific island set new or revised safety measures in an effort to avoid another spill. (Reporting by Cecile Lefort; Editing by Cynthia Osterman)
