Brazil Supreme Court indicts Senate leader for embezzlement

BRASILIA, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Brazil’s Supreme Court indicted the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, on Thursday for embezzlement, a ruling that is expected to fan growing tensions between the judiciary and Congress over corruption cases.

A majority of the top court voted to put the senator on trial for misusing public funds in a nine-year-old case involving the payment of financial support for a daughter Calheiros had in an extramarital affair. (Reporting by Anthony Boadle and Lisandra Paraguassu; Editing by Daniel Flynn)
