Brazil revised budget deficit target to 159 bln reais for 2017, 2018

BRASILIA, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Brazil’s government widened its primary budget deficit targets for both 2017 and 2018 to 159 billion reais ($50.18 billion), Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles announced on Tuesday after nearly a week of protracted talks with lawmakers and cabinet ministers.

The government previously targeted a budget deficit of 139 billion reais before interest payments this year and 129 billion reais for 2018. The revisions came as a fractious government coalition in Congress has refused to raise taxes.
