Brazil could reopen dam talks with Cemig if guarantees tendered

SAO PAULO, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The Brazilian government could reopen talks to return the licensing of four hydropower dams withdrawn from Cia Energética de Minas Gerais SA, should the power utility present real guarantees backing up a deal, Mines and Energy Minister Fernando Coelho Filho said on Thursday.

Cemig is operating the dams under expired licenses. Executives have tried to win new licenses for the operations, which produce 2.9 gigawatts, or 20 percent of Cemig’s installed capacity. (Reporting by Jose Roberto Gomes; Writing by Guillermo Parra-Bernal; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn)
