Brazil electricity watchdog says Eletrobras plan could raise power cost

SAO PAULO, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Brazilian power costs could go up if the government ends a system of quotas for some Eletrobras hydroelectric dams, a director at Brazil’s power sector regulator Aneel said on Wednesday.

The end of the so-called quota regime for those dams is expected to occur along with the Eletrobras privatization.

Aneel’s director, Tiago de Barros, told Reuters on the sidelines of a seminar in Sao Paulo that the change should be done gradually to avoid a spike on power prices for consumers. (Reporting by Luciano Costa; Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe)
