BRIEF-Norway's government approves 21 development licences for Norlaks, overturns previous decision

Sept 5 (Reuters) -

* Norway’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries gives Norlaks approval for building new fish farm concept, Havfarm 1 and Havfarm 3

* The Ministry approves a total of 21 development licences for Norlaks offshore Norway to harvest salmon

* The Ministry partly overturns a previous ruling by the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries which only gave approval for 10 development licences to Norlaks, equal to 7,800 tonnes

* Originally Norlaks applied for 39 development licences in November 2015

* The ministry estimates project to cost around 2 billion Norwegian crowns

* Development licences are part of an initiative by the Norwegian Industry and Fisheries Ministry to spur growth in Norway’s salmon production

* To be awarded a licence under the scheme, companies must show that their plans bring technological innovation while also adhering to strict environmental and animal welfare procedures Source text for Eikon:
