Pompeo says his U.S. team is focused on gaining release of Canadians in China

OTTAWA, Aug 22 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa, said his team is working on getting two Canadian men being held in China released.

“Please do note that our team is focused on helping those two Canadians be released,” Pompeo said “China needs to honor the commitments its made to the world... it’s wrong that they are being held.”

China’s embassy in Canada told Reuters earlier on Thursday that Beijing-Ottawa ties were suffering “gross difficulties,” and demanded Canada free Huawei Technologies Co Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested on a U.S. arrest warrant in Vancouver in December.
